Lesson Plan - Making Music with Fibonacci By Dr. James Frankel
This lesson has students create musical compositions based on the
Fibonacci Sequence - a mysterious numerical sequence discovered in
ancient India and made famous by an Italian mathematician named
Leonardo Fibonacci. The sequence is made up of numbers that are the
sum of the previous two numbers: 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, etc. The lesson
can easily be adapted for grades 4 - 12 by simply giving students in
the younger grades the numbers and having them simply convert them to
pitches for use in their compositions, while students in older grades
could make more creative use of the numeric sequence to create harmonic
progressions, rhythms, phrases, etc.
