Lesson Plan - Making Music with Fibonacci
By Dr. James Frankel

This lesson has students create musical compositions based on the
Fibonacci Sequence - a mysterious numerical sequence discovered in
ancient India and made famous by an Italian mathematician named
Leonardo Fibonacci.  The sequence is made up of numbers that are the
sum of the previous two numbers: 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, etc. The lesson
can easily be adapted for grades 4 - 12 by simply giving students in
the younger grades the numbers and having them simply convert them to
pitches for use in their compositions, while students in older grades
could make more creative use of the numeric sequence to create harmonic
progressions, rhythms, phrases, etc.

Zoom H4n - Electronic “Swiss Army Knife” for Audio Recording and More
The miniaturization of electronic equipment has done wonders for the
ensemble director and performing musician.   Recording and editing
music has gone from requiring a multitude of technicians that worked in
dedicated facilities to today’s ability to make excellent audio
recordings on a hand-held device.  There are many good quality
hand-held recording devices for music professionals to use today.  The
Zoom H4next (H4n), in particular, is one that stands out from the
others with regard to its fidelity, versatility, and utility for
musicians.

Ableton Live Project - Dripsody Redux
By Will Kuhn

In 1955, Hugh Le Caine recorded a unique piece, Dripsody, which is an
early example of sampling.  The piece takes the sound of water
dripping, and through the use of tape splicing and speed adjustments,
makes a sort of "song" out of the audio.   This project demonstrates
how you can bring Le Caine’s idea into the 21st century using Ableton
Live.

ARRASoundTree’s Guide to the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act
www.soundtree.com/stimulus

The Obama Administration has taken unprecedented action in providing our nation’s schools with more than $100 billion in new funding in a sweeping effort to improve the American education system. This funding is a part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA). This legislation offers exciting opportunities for schools districts and universities to make investments in students, teachers, programs, training and infrastructure, to prepare students to advance their education or enter the workforce. ARRA funding supports skill creation and program development in early learning, and for secondary schools and colleges, that help students gain skills and get jobs. Improving student achievement and positive reforms in schools are among ARRA’s guiding principals.

SoundTree is the perfect partner to help your school develop pedagogically and educationally appropriate technology solutions that are targeted specifically toward the goals of ARRA.  SoundTree’s online Guide to the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act outlines the programs of ARRA and offers example technology projects that fit the ARRA funding parameters.

Visit www.soundtree.com/stimulus for more information.  For information on how SoundTree can help you to create programs and proposals that specifically target the ARRA funding objectives, contact your local SoundTree Account Manager at (800) 963-8733 or email stimulus@soundtree.com.
